Singapore’s proudest moment in Asian Cup football

While we anticipate with bated breath, the Asian Cup football final between the Socceroos and the Taeguk Warriors, little did we know, the year in which the good people of PlayPal were born – 1984 – was the only time Singapore, as hosts, qualified for the Finals!

That year also gave us arguably the biggest result in our Asian Cup football history. In a Group B match, we went 1-0 down to a 55th minute penalty against Iran. Not willing to give in, our Lions stormed back with a reply in just 6 minutes.

A Beckham-esque cross from the left, and Razali Saad sprinted into the penalty box with desire and conviction to head the ball past a helpless Iranian keeper who could only stand and watch. Our boys gave everything they had and left the pitch, heads held high with a hard-fought point in the bag.

As we celebrate SG50, let us also look back with pride at our sporting achievements. Big or small, they are worth celebrating. Join PlayPal in supporting Team Singapore this SEA Games on home soil!

To our boys, come on and let’s win that elusive first gold medal for Singapore!
